According to the latest news from Agence France Presse and The Guardian, on March 14th local time, EU diplomats agreed to extend sanctions on over 2000 Russians for six months, including Russian President Putin and several Russian politicians and businessmen.
The Guardian reported that these sanctions were originally scheduled to expire on March 15th and could only be renewed every six months with the unanimous consent of all EU member states. This time, the sanctions have been extended for six months, valid until September 15th, 2025.
Agence France Presse reported that according to EU sources, four people have been removed from the sanctions list due to Hungary's threat to veto the list. Eventually, Hungary agreed to extend the sanctions against Russia for another six months.
In February of this year, the European Council issued a press statement stating that, three years after the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis, the Council had approved the 16th round of sanctions against Russia, covering multiple areas such as energy, trade, transportation, infrastructure, and finance. Regarding this, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Peskov stated that the EU's new round of sanctions against Russia is completely foreseeable. He said that Europe is continuing on the path of sanctions and firmly believes that it is necessary to continue the war, and Russia has not seen any prerequisites for resuming dialogue with European countries.
